Looking Back and Moving Forward: Myelopathy.org’s 2023-24 Journey

It’s the time of year again when we at Myelopathy.org reach the end of our financial year and reflect on all we have achieved in the last 12 months and look forward to the year ahead.

2023-24 Highlights

  • Our Support Group  – which is the heart and soul of everything we do – has continued to grow and thrive.  It now supports over 3,500 people with DCM worldwide and we are inspired daily by people’s stories and the support they are willing to give to each other.

  • The much loved “Coffee with Esther” continues to draw a steady stream of attendees from our community and provides a safe space for people to get together to chat and share experiences and advice.

  • 2024 saw the launch of the Myelopathy.org stationery collection.  The products are designed by people living with DCM and this initiative raises much needed awareness and funds.

  • In July 2023 we launched our first Summer Fundraiser when we invited our community to raise much needed funds by getting involved in challenges.  Our Festive Fundraiser invited our community to become regular donors.  Regular donations (whatever the size) are incredibly important to us and help us to plan for the future.

  • In May 2024 the amazing Dr Rory Murphy from the Barrow Neurological Institute in the USA and an Ambassador for Myelopathy.org ran across the Grand Canyon to raise awareness and funds.  Rory smashed his fundraising target of US$1,500 by raising over US$2,200 for Myelopathy.org.

  • Our RECODE-DCM research network continues to lead cutting edge research into DCM worldwide.  In particular our three research incubators are busy writing papers and leading the way in improving our understanding of the condition.

  • Our 2nd Annual Research Prize was awarded in 2024 to Dr Satkunendrarajah and Dr Aditya from Wisconsin, USA who submitted an innovative research paper on breathing difficulties in people with DCM.

We have said goodbye to some longstanding members of our Trustee team during 2023-24. Johann Graggaber and Weslie Janeway were founding trustees who have been with us since the very earliest days.  David Townshend joined a bit later in February 2020.  We thank them all for their commitment and contribution to Myelopathy.org over the years and wish them well.

The Financial Year 2024-2025 is going to be a very exciting one for Myelopathy.org and watch this space for a very exciting announcement in the next couple of weeks!
